Overview

Founded locally in 1989, the Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity (JAHFH) is in its 18th year of service to Joplin and the Jasper County Area. A nonprofit Christian ministry, we seek to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. We partner with deserving families and the community to build affordable, healthy homes. Through the homes we build, hope is restored and lives are changed as the devastating cycle of poverty is broken.

The Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity has seen great growth this year. Homebuilding activities increased and a ReStore has been opened. To help with this, four employees have been hired to support both construction and the ReStore.

Family Selection

Homeowner families are selected on the basis of income, need, ability to pay, and willingness to partner with Habitat. Each homeowner family is required to complete 400 hours of volunteer labor on their home and/or those of other families. Once construction is completed, the house is “sold” to the new homeowners at no profit with a no-interest mortgage.

Requests for information on the Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity totaled 127. Of this total, 38 requested partner family application forms which resulted in three additional families selected for homes.

Building and Site Selection

Two homes were dedicated this year. Two more homes are under construction with Carthage waiting to be started in early 2008. In addition, five lots were donated for future building sites.

Church Relations

Area churches continue to support the work of Habitat. Monthly and quarterly contributions are received on a regular basis. Peace Lutheran Church hosted the Annual Chili Feed with matching funds provided by Thrivent Financial. This year $1540 was raised.

Public Relations

A booth was placed at the Homebuilders Association Home Show and enjoyed tremendous response by those attending. The media provided excellent coverage for home dedications and the opening of the ReStore. Extensive advertising was also done in preparation for the opening of the ReStore.

Fundraising

Donations and pledges from individuals, business and churches totaled $18,500 this year. Grants and support from the following businesses were gratefully received.

Boylan Foundation

RJN Foundation

Freeman Johnson Trust

US Bank

Habitat International

United Way, Carthage

Other

ReStore. In July, a 12,300 square foot building was acquired for the ReStore and the relocation of the Habitat office. The ReStore has been busy recycling building materials and home furnishings. These items are sold at a reduce price offering an opportunity for more people to improve their homes. In addition, these items are kept our of our area landfills. We are very appreciative of those individuals and businesses who donate to the ReStore.

International Connection. As part of the Habitat International program, area affiliates tithe a percentage of the undesignated funds raised. This year JAHFH was pleased to contribute $6400 to the construction of Habitat homes around the world.

Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity is improving our community one family at a time. Thousands of people in our area still live in substandard housing, and much remains to be done. With God’s help and increasing community support, we will keep hammering away until no one in the Joplin area will have to live in unsafe, unhealthy housing.
